"On the international scene the Korean War took the spotlight with United Nations casualties mounting to more than 100,000 and on the Red side to more than a million. Truce talks appeared stalemated at year's end as were those on disarmament in the United Nations assembly. Under General Eisenhower, Western Europe rearmed at a rapid pace." The worst railroad wreck in 33 years carried eighty-five to their deaths in New Jersey and in Kansas and Missouri, swollen rivers took forty lives and caused damage estimated at a billion dollars." Nineteen-fifty-one was the year of probes, with the Kefauver committee investigating the links between the underworld and politics leading the parade. The Internal Revenue department also came in for scrutiny and a shakeup." VS people at investigations in the US Capitol. Ex-Mayor O'Dwyer of New York testifies. Frank Costello smokes a cigarette. "Politics. Britain went to the polls and returned its wartime prime minister, Winston Churchill, and his conservatives to power. In America, Senator Robert Taft and Governor Earl Warren tossed their hats in the ring for the top Republican spot, while General Eisenhower and President Truman remained silent (about the upcoming election in 1952)."
