Little Cucumber charming is rocked in his cradle at home by his mom, who tells the young un to "not go the end of the garden, as that is where the mouse is, and he'll bite off your tail."

Little Cucumber wakes up the next morning to find his mom and dad gone. He puts on his straw hat and bindle (hobo pole, hobo stick) and sets into the garden for a walk.

Little Cucumber arrives at a fence. A kitten sitting on top of the fence gives him a warning that a Watch Dog is on the loose. Little Cucumber becomes friends with the puppy and they play a game of tag while the kitten watches. The kitten joins the game.
