Biography: John Glenn
FI montage of Glenn's historic 1962 rocket launch; high angle MS of the rocket's thrusters engaging for liftoff (countdown on audio as well; 2 quick shots of the rocket taking off; excellent shot of the ground as the rocket takes off into the stratosphere (camera is mounted on the craft; slo-mo panning tight LS of the Earth as seen from just outside of the atmosphere (fantastic shot); CU Glenn in space helmet; MS Glenn smiling, waving to the press.

February, 1962: MS/LSs enthusiatic ticker tape parade in Glenn's honor. He rides an open convertible through the confettti-laden streets w/Lyndon Johnson and John Kennedy, although not together; LBJ and JFK never ride in the same car. Also accompanying Glenn is his wife.
Diss to panning tight LS Ohio countryside. Still of Glenn as a young boy. Cut to MS/LSs young boys playing w/mechanized model airplanes in a field. LSs old single engine planes (one shot of a biplan) in flight, landing. Still of young Glenn with high school sweetie (later his wife).
Outbreak of WWII: montage of Marine fighter pilots running to Tomcats, taking off, in flight. Good shot of a carrier sailing as seen from one of the fighter planes.
Outbreak of the Korean War. Montage: MSs pilots racing to planes, CU pilot strapping mask on, tight LSs fighters taking off from carrier, etc. Some good aerial fight stuff: American fighter dropping a bomb, engaging the enemy in the sky (great subjective shot of a dogfight, enemy plane getting destroyed and the camera swooping through the smoke).
1957. MS Glenn waving to the camera from cockpit of fighter. Tight LS of fighter taking off from runway, pan left w/jet. Gleen becomes the first man to fly coast to coast faster than the speed of sound. MS Glenn's wife and kids posing on runway in California. MS smiling Glenn waving from cockpit of plane after the test mission's success. MS Glenn posing w/his kids.
CU file cabinet, hand running across labelled files. MSs Glenn participating in early NASA space research (gets heart monitors placed on chest, dons silvery space suit, boards a giant centrifuge). Great shots of the centrifuge in motion, intercut with CUs of Glenn on it. CUs old info-gathering machines in operation (computers). Operation Mercury. Montage test pilots running through physical tests as scientists gauge the "guinea pigs" potential. MSs military and NASA brass sitting in a room, narrowing search down to 7 men. Press conference where the seven are introduced. Panning MS as their name is called: Malcolm Carpenter, LeRoy Cooper, John Glenn, Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra, Alan Sheperd, and Donald Slayton. The Mercury Astronauts.
Footage of the Mercury Astronauts at play, water skiing and scuba diving. Montage of a failed rocket launch: tight LS NASA control room preparing; CU's hands on control boards; MSs concerning scientists; tight LS rocket taking off, getting a few hundred feet into the air, then exploding into a huge fireball. Montage of the seven men getting ready: MS's of them inspecting a rocket; MS of them in a classroom; MS Glenn donning scuba gear, swimming in pool; MS men experiencing zero gravity; MS's them on space simulators; great MS space capsule crashing into water and so on.
Tight LS Glenn stepping from a station wagon parked in the driveway of his suburban home to greet his wife and teenage kids. Cut to candid shots of the Glenns at home.
Apr 12, 1961: CU of Los Angeles Times newspaper headline, says, "Russians Put First Man In Space". Cut to MS and CU of Alan Sheperd wearing a space suit and sitting in a capsule. MS's of Glenn, acting as Sheperd's backup pilot, milling about a control room, leading to lengthy montage of the rocket countdown: CU's of TV screens, printers, computer screens, nervous console monitors wearing communications headgear, hands tapping. Sherperd waiting in capsule, radar dishes, communication equipment, and tight LS of the rockets taking off and into the sky.
FI to Cape Canaveral, February 20th, 1962, at night. Montage of NASA preparations for Glenn's orbit around the earth: MS's of large spotlights, huddled silouettes standing and smoking in the pre-dawn, tight LS's of control room and console operators, CU's of clocks and relay screens, Glenn donning his astronaut suit (putting on helmet, clasping and zipping suit, slipping on gloves, and so on). Cut to tight LS's and MS's of Glenn making his way to the launchpad, eventually easing into the Friendship 7 capsule (this segment is accompanied by a VO of Glenn talking inspirational). Rapid, edgy launch montage: low angle MS's of the bridge separating from the rocket; CU's in the control room as he lifts into the stratosphere. Tight LS's of Earth's horizons as seen from the Friendship 7. MS's of joyous console operators, one of whom lights a cigar. Good slo-mo MS's of Glenn manning the capsule, talking to ground control (TV feed). Wide LS's of sunsets. MS's and tight LS's of radar dishes and other ground control communication devices.
Crisis in the skies. Land-based computers indicate a mechanical failure abroad the Friendship 7. Glenn has to control the craft's attitude in orbit. Ground control also becomes aware of a loose heat shield that could complicate atmosphere re-entry. MS's of the capsule's parachute unfurling, slo-mo TV feed of Glenn manning the controls, tight LS's of rescue helicopter departing naval crusier for Friendship recovery, MS of Glenn stepping from Navy copter to shake pilot's hand, then to greet NASA officials, MS's of Glenn waving and smiling to people aboard the naval vessel. MS's of Glenn in civies, being greeted in California by his wife and children. CU's of Glenn finally showing emotion.
