Stevens and his counsel John G. Adams, and formalized in a document dated April 13, 1954, and filed with the Subcommittee and in which a general charge is made that Senator Joseph R. McCarthy as Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations United States Senate, its chief counsel Roy M. Cohn, as well as other members of it staff, sought by improper means to obtain preferential treatment for one Private G. Major General Ebert. Yes Sir, I did, on the afternoon of Wednesday July 8th. Attorney Ray Jenkins. And was anyone present when you arrived at his office besides Senator McCarthy? Major General Ebert. My first conversation was with the Senator alone in his office. Attorney Ray Jenkins. I will ask you at this time General to relate to this committee the conversation verbatim as well as you can remember it. Major General Ebert. At that time Senator McCarty informed me that he was very much interested in obtaining a direct reserve commission for his consultant Mr. G. David Schine. Attorney Ray Jenkins. Did you know Pvt. G. David Schine at that time? Major General Ebert. I did not know him personally. Attorney Ray Jenkins. Had you heard of him? Major General Ebert. Yes Sir I had. Attorney Ray Jenkins. Proceeded with the conversation. Major General Ebert. The Senator pointed out as I recall it, that he felt that Mr. Schine because of his background of investigative experience with the committee, was fully qualified for a commission.

At about that time, as I recall it, a few minutes after I initiated my conversation with the Senator, Mr. Roy Cohn came into the room. Mr. Cohn also emphasized Attorney Ray Jenkins. Joseph McCarthy (R Wisconsin) evidence I think that obviously the Chair must be leaning to a certain extent to allowing hearsay depending on how the court rules. On the other hand if evidence of any importance is put in by way of hearsay, I believe the individual quoted, should be available, so they can be put under oath and sworn. I make that point because of repeating hearsay. Senator John McClellan (D Arkansas) and if they are not produced as witnesses I certainly will not insist on hearsay testimony. Major General Ebert. of July I received numerous telephone calls from Mr. Cohn either one or no telephone calls. But I received constantly throughout that period possibly an average Attorney Ray Jenkins. Senator McCarthy was then engaged, did you? Major General Ebert. I certainly did Sir. Attorney Ray Jenkins. And that was the investigation of Communists and of the infiltration of Communists in industry, in near every branch of the government, as well as in the Army.
