Gunfight in Wild West LS street in Western town, showdown between two men, one with rifle, the other looking like the sheriff in black suit and pistol. Strangely, onlookers are standing around BEHIND each of the men, which would not seem wise. The rifleman shoots, and the black-suited man falls, but draws his gun and kills the rifleman. The townspeople rush in to crowd around the victims. CU dead pistol-packer on the ground
Gold Miners WS forty-niner wading in stream, using gold pan to sift through sediment, very scenic river location with mountains in BG. CUs gold pan with water swirling, hands checks fine silt for gold. MS miner placing gold nuggets into leather bag as he stands on bank of scenic river, he tucks the pouch into his shirt and walk out of frame.

Silent B&W high shot of covered wagons moving down the trail. Closer views of wagons coming up over hill. Some emulsion damage, but interesting shots follow of wooded creek, sun behind clouds.
Silent B&W shot of cavalry moving in large formation on horses. This looks like the real thing, but then we have clips of bad-looking gun guy out of the silent Western movie era. A woman comes in and puts on holster and pistol, ready to go and fight. She leaves, and he looks even more glum. Back to the cavalry, riding in formation, galloping towards the camera with flag. The pedigree of this film is unclear, but the soldiers look to be pre-WW1 vintage, perhaps shot for use in a Western. Brief sequence at end of gunslinger type clambering over rocks.
Master 1 - Tape 2 Center of small western town in the middle of the day. Outside courthouse or city hall. An American flag waves over the building, men walking on dirt roads, a covered wagon with four horses slowly making its way toward the camera. Probably re-enactment of western locale. A little out of focus.
Color footage of "Wild West" scenes: starts with what looks like the Oklahoma Land Rush; anyway, what looks like a touring company of "Oklahoma!" is moving across the grass (a football field: look and you can see the lines) in wagons, horses, and on foot, waving to the camera. Also some good high-angle LSs of main street in the old west with horse drawn carts and pedestrian traffic.
Master 2 - Tape 2 Old West Cowboys and Indians: WS pastel desert landscape, short shrubs. Horses bearing cavalry seen in the distance. Indians cover over a hill, maybe 25 of them on horseback. Good shot of lots of horses running down a hill with wild Indians on the back. Warpath. Good shot of them going into the water, river, on horseback. This looks like cheesey tv-western material.
Master 2 - Tape 2 Indians on horseback invading a fort. Going through the main gate. Hatchets raised. One horse and his rider are shot at and go down (dramatic). Indian in the woods with bow and arrow. Single feather in headband (brave?) Walks very quietly - cautiously, camera looks like it's stalking him. LS from behind barrel of gun - young indian runs out from behind brush, gun aims and fires, indian goes down. CU Wagon Train on fire. Indians on horseback around wagon train, threatening. Causing trouble. Circling fat chief in head-dress comes around.
Master 2 - Tape 2 Interesting shot of Indians (Native Americans) helping the British Redcoats fight the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Footage shot in the 1910s or 1920s, recreated for that period. Indians look much different than they would later become for Hollywood. First shot is a back shot, as they run out, axes flying in the air. A bunch of Redcoats are seen from the back with bayonets, but it's becoming a chaotic mob scene, possible a slaughter/massacre. WS chaos in a town (house in f/g) Indian axes a dead person on the ground twice and runs off. MS Raping and pillaging (men chasing women, general destruction) Hand-to-hand combat. Made for silent film days. More appropriate as film history or as history of our impressions of Native Americans than it is as stock
Master 3 - Tape 1 Cliche TV western footage. Sheriffs and Deputys with cowboy hats go quickly to their horses and mount. One points a finger, as if to say the bad guy went that-a-way. The horses, mounted, ride quickly out of town in pursuit. We see one man (maybe the bad guy; a solitary cowboy, anyway) on a horse come toward the camera and then go up a gorge. The posse comes after him. The posse head has a white hat on. MS they all come to a stop, look around. There appear to be two groups. They look around and then join up with each other to after the lone guy.
Master 3 - Tape 1 Great shot of old steam train (black smoke) riding fast from left to right. Group of bandits on horseback start to time the train, running alongside. Some gunfire is seen as the bandits shoot at the train. One of the bandits actually gets on the train, starts to climb up. Lots of the other bandits lag behind in the wake.
Master 3 - Tape 1 Cowboy on horseback rides hurriedly to the front of a western saloon. He stops his horse and rushes into the bar. (Window in bar has "Saloon" painted in old west lettering, a "closed" sign hangs in front as the guy tries to break his way in anyway.) Another cowboy (with kerchief) takes a chair and smashes it through the window. Then he jumps through the broken window, into the saloon. Fight goes on outside, on the steps. Guys are wrestling, both wearing gun holsters. One wears black hat. Good western action.
Master 3 - Tape 1 Overhead WS of two guys on a dirt road in the middle of an old western town, about to duel. One guy aims and shoots his rifle as the other sort of stumbles forward. He is hit and falls, but then shoots and hits the rifleman. This is kind badly acted so the action is stiff. Another take of the same scene begins but then cuts to a closer shot of the crowd rushing towards the fallen men. CU bearded man lying on ground with gun in his hand, face up, looking dead. But there's no blood. Overhead MS of townspeople runing away from street - chaos. Overhead WS of townspeople carrying both men, assumed dead, off the street.
Master 3 - Tape 1 Recreation of the Oklahoma land rush, when homesteaders could squat on the land & make it their own. Campy exaggerated shots. Opens with a covered wagon train flanked by happy, running people. Good color. Families go by: little girls in bonnets, raising their hands. One of the wagons is filled with people and a huge bass fiddle. Man in a top hat side by side with man in a stetson. Lots of people on horseback go by camera. A crowd rushes straight toward the camera. A lone man on a pennyfarthing bicycle. CU of running feet, horse's legs and wagon wheels. Lots of horses feet. DS on more bass fiddle and people running. Sign on wagon: "The Old West Still Lives SEPTEMBER 16, 1893." Men and women on horseback follow.
Master 3 - Tape 1 A group of cowboys and townspeople come from a distance and run into a sparsely set-up western town. A stampede of angry cattle follow behind them. Something went wrong and made the cattle angry. Hold on to your hats. Out of control, Rushing, Panic, Retreat.
Master 3 - Tape 1 Land rush footage. CU of man's feet, and a sack of grain. Starts to run. Feet and horse hooves pass by camera in a rush. Cu Camera tracks excited happy young man on horseback as he gallops along. Has very cheesy, poorly painted on beard/mutton chops. Shaky MCU husband (with beard) and wife homesteaders driving a covered facing camera. Man has the reins, urges the horses on. She points to something. Lone man on a pennyfarthing bicycle rides toward camera and falls, crashing to the ground (blooper). Low angle shot of homesteaders rushing past camera. More CUs of people now walking calmly past camera. Lone guy on the pennyfarthing bicycle again. This time he makes it past the camera. Overhead shot of a main street in a small town lined with people. Man on a pennyfarthing bicycle with a cigar rides through street and then dismounts. A guy in a very early automobile is behind him. Could be a parade of sorts. CU low angle shots of Middle-aged women in colorful bonnets, bearded man in stetson passing by. Several more shots of the lone guy on a pennyfarthing bicycle riding towards the camera.
Master 3 - Tape 2 Wonderful cliched low-angle shot of a cowboy in silhouette (against a dark blue-ish sky with sunset) riding his horse toward the camera, stopping, waving his cowboy hat, turning round, and riding back away from camera. Very blue dark dusk sky with some remaining sunlight through clouds. Really nice.
Master 3 - Tape 2 Old West: WS Cowboy on horseback on top of hill. Stopped at peak of hill. Slowly starts to angle down the hill, step by step. Nice blue big sky. Appears that the guy is looking for something, somebody.
Master 3 - Tape 2 Great, cliche western. WS of men and women of the old west gathered in a large tavern or saloon, having fun. Playing music, playing cards, looking at pretty women. A friendly looking women in a long flowing dress mingles with some of the cowboys and then sits down with the band. People play guitar, bass fiddle. Nice chandelier overhead. Good scene.
Master 3 - Tape 2 MS-MWS Pioneering couple on buckboard of covered wagon, leading a team of horses. Wildly colorful, a little campy and overenthusiastic. The man really lets the horse have it with a crack of the whip and a pull on the reins. They're rushing, hurrying, going faster, a little manic.
1,000 reward sign "for the capture dead or alive, of Draw Egan, Bandit. Dan McKittrick, Sheriff." Cowboys stand on town's main street, horses ride up. WS open plains, Posse rides away from the camera leaving a dust cloud behind. VS posse riding through plains. Quick cut back to men assembling in the town street. Intertitles explain the action. More shots, MS and WS of groups of men on horses riding in the plains MS one rider with his rifle pointing out his man. They are now in pursuit.
A chase ensues between two groups of horsemen. Wide shot of posse riding up mountain side. MS other group decide to fight. VS, WS horses over plains, through hills. One group stops at a cabin "The Outlaw's cabin".
Ms interior outlaw's cabin - men scrambling to remain undetected. MS men crawling through brush, approaching cabin. Gun fight ensues - lots of smoke from rifles. One guys in the cabin pulls up floor boards, crawls under the cabin, other follow to their escape. A few men remain, still shooting at the other guys outside. Eventually, one guy is left in the cabin, still shooting, another lies dead next to him. He throws down his gun in frustration, when it's empty and won't fire anymore and escapes through the hole in the floor. The place is surrounded. When the guys surrounded the place finally break in they find it empty, one throws his hat down in exasperation. They see the open hole in the floor. Lone guy on his horse runs to camera, looks and then rides away.
intertitle. MS saloon with a horse tie-up in front. Man walks out and throws his cigarette on the ground. A couple of men ride up and tie up their horses. MS interior saloon. 3 men walk in together and are immediately roughed up. MS bearded man in a hat smoking cigar, looking suspiciously off to the side. MS guys roughing it up at the bar - one guy even shoves the bartender - all in good fun. Ext. another guy rides up to the saloon, ties up his horse. Enters the bar where the bearded guy notices him. The group of roughnecks notice him too and he starts to look nervous. MWS he stands alone and calmly at the bar smoking while the others question and insult him. One guy tries to pull a gun on him but he's too quick and draws first. The others recoil but the bearded man look satisfied. The others attend to the shot man - who appears only to have a mild wound in the arm or hand.
Bearded, cigar smoking man approaches cowboy at the now empty bar and introduces himself. The sit down at a table. Crowd of men drinking at bar. The women at the table talk and smoke. Bearded guy offers cowboy job as a Marshall. He flicks his ash and thinks about it and agrees to try. WS main street in town.
Master 1783 - Tape 1 Historical reenactment (pioneer days) TLS covered wagons, watchful horsemen riding up hill, misty mountains in BG. Wagon Train. Go West, young man. (20-2) LS covered wagons -- wagon train -- ambling along rocks in desert. (20-5) Rear view TLS stagecoach driving along dusty road in semi-arid region. Traveling MS lead stagecoach horses running at full gallop along dusty road; zoom out to TLS stagecoach & horses. Panning LSs stagecoach at full clip.
